Women Engineers at Allied

Women Engineers at Allied 800 533 Steel Buildings | Allied Steel Buildings

At Allied, our reputation for being undeterred solutionists is owed in part to the unique backgrounds of our team members. Our engineers go above and beyond to develop solutions that work for our clients, especially when that means thinking outside the box. Sometimes that means building taller, faster or more flexibly, and sometimes it means pioneering solutions to achieve outcomes that our clients had previously been told were impossible. Innovating to develop new solutions usually requires looking at things from a different angle and having a team of engineers from a variety of backgrounds certainly helps us explore all possible angles.

In honor of International Women in Engineering Day this June 23rd, we interviewed some of the women on our engineering team who are helping design the solutions that we are known for. Not only are they shaping the future of construction and inspiring the next generation of women engineers to make their mark, they’re bringing our client’s projects and dreams to life.

Read on to learn more about why they got into engineering and what they bring to the table, turning steel into the most challenging structures.

Getting to know the Women in Engineering at Allied

Can you tell me about your journey into engineering and what inspired you to pursue this career path?

Carolina: When I was a little girl, I remember hearing my mother talk about construction and buildings. She was not a designer, but she was related to the construction industry. So growing up, I started to like and believe that I wanted to be an engineer. I enjoy turning all those complex calculations and problems into something tangible that can be used by other people and that can have a big impact on a community.

What led you to join Allied Steel Buildings, and how has your role evolved since you started?

Nathalia: I joined Allied Steel Buildings because I was drawn to the opportunity to grow in a global company focused on innovation and high-quality steel design. Since I started, my role has evolved significantly, I’ve gained more responsibilities, strengthened my technical skills, and become a trusted team member who supports others and contributes to complex projects with confidence.

What projects or accomplishments at Allied are you most proud of, and why?

Carolina: I am proud to feel that I can be a unifying force in the team. I care about our work environment and the well-being of those around me, so I try to use that energy to get our group together and propose new ways to improve our work and efficiency. I also feel like finding understanding and empathy are key to keeping our teams working toward the same goals.

How do you feel your work has impacted the company or the steel building industry at large?

Maria Paula: In my role as design supervisor, I am primarily responsible for all scheduling work in the engineering department. I believe my greatest contributions to the company relate to the efficient use of engineering resources, also establishing commitment between PMs and engineers to meet realistic delivery dates. I coordinate all engineering work with other departments (field and manufacturing), as well as management of engineering changes, ensuring they are completed on time, within cost, and with the expected quality.

Who has inspired you throughout your career, and how have they influenced your approach to your work?

Nathalia: Honestly, I would say that I am my own biggest inspiration. From the beginning of my career as a civil engineer, I’ve been driven by a strong belief in my future self; the version of me that’s capable of achieving great things through dedication and hard work. That vision keeps me focused and motivated, especially during challenges. Surrounding myself with hardworking people who have had successful professional careers inspires me and motivates me to work hard toward my own goals.

What advice would you give to young women who are considering a career in engineering or construction?

Carolina: Be confident, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to take on challenges. I would say that it is important to have an open mind when you are starting your professional career, and be open to learn as much as you can, keep a mindset of continuous improvement and personal growth. Give yourself the opportunity to try different job positions. You may discover what is it that you really like.

Nathalia: Civil engineering is a great career, but you may face some gender-related barriers. That’s why it’s important to have a strong mindset, confidence, and the courage to stand up for yourself. Discipline is key. Stay focused and committed to learning; knowledge can be one of your most powerful tools, and open doors. Set your goals and go after them with determination. Believe in your potential and don’t let anything stop you.

Maria Paula: Engineering has traditionally been a male-dominated field, however, as time passes, we see this paradigm breaking down. Engineering requires brilliance, perspective, and strength. Entering these fields isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about reshaping industries that have often overlooked or marginalized women’s contributions.
