Forging Strong Ties for a Bright Future

Steel Structure Supermarket in Panama City, Panama. In late 2021 an established player in Panama’s grocery and food distribution industry embarked on a journey to expand into the supermarket business with Allied Steel Buildings as their trusted building partner. From our early days of working together over a decade ago, the client was marked by Allied’s dedication to quality, cost-efficiency, and customer service, and when the time for a major expansion came, they felt confident in entrusting us with their first pivotal project. Together and with a shared enthusiasm for excellence, Unico Supermarket was born.

Steel Structure Supermarket – Collaborative Design for Success

For their inaugural large-scale supermarket, the client’s vision encompassed a suite of specific elements, including an attention-grabbing entrance adorned with a prominent logo, insulated roof and wall panels, and an interior mezzanine for storage and office space. Working off a preliminary elevation provided by the client’s architect, Allied and our longtime design partner Decimal collaborated to make the structure a reality. Value-engineering is always a part of our process, so when it came to making suggestions or proposing changes that we felt would benefit the project, we were thrilled to have the full support of the client and their architect, allowing us to skillfully optimize cost-efficiency while maintaining strength and beauty.

Seizing Challenges as Opportunities

The project’s timeline presented some challenges but Allied rose to the occasion and demonstrated our dedication to client satisfaction. Though design was approved a swift two months after the contract closed in December 2021, significant permit delays stalled fabrication by a year between March 2022 and March 2023. As the client worked and waited for these permits, Allied searched high and low for ways to maintain pricing despite prevailing materials cost increases. Thanks in no small part to the flexibility of our trusted vendors and our ability to produce the primary steel in-house, we succeeded in holding pricing and gave the client exactly what they wanted despite a year-long wait.

By July 2023, installation was underway and even faced with the challenges of working through Panama’s rainy season, the building is on track to meet the client’s required completion date at the year’s end. The attractive structure comprises primary steel sourced from Allied’s facility in Spain, a vibrant array of horizontal and vertical PBR panel roof and walls, a functional mezzanine, and an inviting entrance.

A Prelude to Future Collaborations

This project marks the start of other upcoming ventures, with the client committed to a new distribution center , currently in the design and coordination phase. As the first of 10 future supermarkets, Unico Supermarket carries major significance for both the client and Allied and it is with great pride that we designed and delivered a building that was on budget and exceeded the client’s expectations for quality, timing, and support. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to earn their satisfaction and solidify a relationship built on loyalty and support as we both look ahead into the future.
