Job Summary:
The Logistics Coordinator – Structural Steel (Outbound) is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing all outbound shipments of structural steel components and pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) materials. This role ensures accurate, timely, and cost-effective delivery to job sites while coordinating closely with production, project management, and transportation providers.
This position requires deep knowledge of structural steel fabrication, load planning, and jobsite delivery requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and schedule all outbound shipments of structural steel and PEMB components
- Develop efficient load plans based on material type, weight, dimensions, and jobsite sequencing
- Partner with production, project managers, and shop supervisors to align shipment schedules with fabrication timelines
- Select and coordinate carriers (flatbeds, step decks, and specialized trailers) based on load requirements
- Ensure proper documentation for shipments, including bills of lading, packing lists, and job-specific requirements
- Track shipments in transit and proactively communicate updates, delays, or issues to internal teams and customers
- Ensure loads are compliant with DOT regulations, weight limits, and securement standards
- Coordinate oversized/overweight shipments, including permits and routing when necessary
- Troubleshoot and resolve shipping discrepancies, damages, or delivery issues
- Maintain accurate records of shipments, freight costs, and logistics performance metrics
- Optimize freight costs while maintaining service levels and delivery commitments
- Support continuous improvement efforts related to shipping efficiency, load optimization, and on-time delivery
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum 5+ years of experience in logistics within structural steel manufacturing or PEMB environment (required)
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s Degree (Supply Chain, Logistics, Business) or equivalent amount of experience a plus.
- Strong understanding of structural steel components, fabrication processes, and jobsite sequencing
- Experience with flatbed and specialized freight shipping (oversized loads)
- Knowledge of DOT regulations, load securement, and permitting requirements
- Experience working with ERP systems and shipping/logistics software
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Outlook
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong load planning and spatial reasoning skills for steel components
- Ability to interpret shop drawings, bills of material, and shipping lists
- High attention to detail in documentation and shipment accuracy
- Strong communication skills with internal teams, drivers, and customers
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
- Problem-solving mindset with ability to quickly resolve logistical challenges
- Cost-conscious decision-making while maintaining delivery expectations
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in Pre-Engineered Metal Building (PEMB) manufacturing
- Experience coordinating multi-load or project-based shipments to construction sites
- Familiarity with crane unload requirements and jobsite delivery coordination
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
Key Success Measures
- Achieve and maintain high on-time delivery performance aligned with project schedules
- Reduce and control freight cost per load/ton through effective carrier selection and load optimization
- Maintain high shipment accuracy, minimizing shortages, damages, and rework
- Ensure strong alignment between production schedules and shipping execution
- Proactively identify and resolve logistics issues to prevent project delays
- Maintain compliance with all DOT regulations and safety standards
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull objects weighing up to [e.g., 50 pounds] regularly.
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions common to a manufacturing facility (e.g., varying temperatures, noise levels, potential for dust/debris, ).
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating equipment and handling supplies.
- Ability to safely navigate around heavy equipment and steel materials
Work Schedule:
- Monday-Friday, 7:00am – 4:00pm
- Overtime and weekend work may be required.
Benefits:
