Job Summary: 

The EHS Specialist strategizes and implements the organization’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs to ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal environmental standards and regulations. This position facilitates site inspections, risk assessments, and corrective action initiatives to prevent environmental incidents, protect employee health and safety, and maintain a compliant, safe, and sustainable workplace. This role promotes a culture of safety, ensures compliance with all regulations, and integrates EHS practices with 5S initiatives to enhance workplace organization and productivity.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategize, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs and training initiatives specific to steel fabrication operations, including new hire orientation, welding, crane, and forklift safety, as well as periodic refresher courses.
  • Ensure full compliance with OSHA and other regulatory standards through regular audits, job hazard analyses, and proactive risk assessments.
  • Conduct thorough incident investigations for accidents and near misses, identifying root causes, implementing corrective actions, and managing workers’ compensation claims in partnership with HR.
  • Facilitate emergency preparedness efforts, including the creation and maintenance of evacuation plans, coordination of fire drills, and first-aid and response training.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by facilitating safety committee meetings, communication campaigns, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Coordinate all environmental compliance programs, including hazardous material handling, waste management, and welding byproduct control, in accordance with EPA and state/local requirements.
  • Track and maintain environmental permits (air, waste, water) and ensure timely reporting and cooperation with regulatory agencies during inspections.
  • Collaborate with production teams to integrate safety and environmental standards into daily operations, SOPs, and 5S/lean initiatives focused on workplace organization and process efficiency.
  • Support continuous improvement activities, including Kaizen and lean manufacturing projects, to enhance both safety performance and operational effectiveness.
  • Continuously improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) covering critical safety processes such as Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, and proper equipment operation.
  • Properly use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Work cooperatively with team members to achieve production goals and departmental objectives.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and codes of conduct.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in EHS management with 3+ years of EHS experience in steel fabrication, metalworking, or similar manufacturing environments.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or related field preferred; Associate’s degree or equivalent and relevant experience in steel fabrication or manufacturing required.
  • Certifications:
    • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification with a focus on welding and fabrication safety preferred or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
    • OSHA Train-the-Trainer Certification preferred or willingness to obtain within 180 days of hire to support in-house safety training programs.
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or similar credentials are a plus.
    • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) or welding safety certifications are a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA standards (e.g., 29 CFR 1910.252 for welding), EPA, and Texas-specific environmental regulations (e.g., TCEQ air permits).
  • Familiarity with 5S methodology or lean manufacturing in industrial settings is a plus
  • Expertise in evaluating safety and environmental considerations for steel fabrication processes in advanced manufacturing, including welding, cutting, and material handling.
  • Strong communication skills, including written and verbal communication, to conduct training and collaborate with fabrication teams, including welders, machine operators, material handlers, maintenance teams, and supervisors. 
  • Proficiency in EHS management software or tools for tracking compliance, incidents, and environmental metrics.
  • Ability to analyze data and produce reports on safety performance and environmental initiatives (e.g., emissions reduction, waste minimization).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for documentation and presentations.
  • Ability to work on-site at the McGregor, TX facility, with occasional travel to support global collaborations and a proactive commitment to innovation in a multinational setting.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand basic English/Spanish to interpret/follow safety guidelines and work instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.

  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull objects weighing up to [e.g., 50 pounds] regularly.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions common to a manufacturing facility (e.g., varying temperatures, noise levels, potential for dust/debris, wet floors).
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating equipment and handling supplies.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a professional steel fabrication environment with standard manufacturing conditions, including controlled exposure to noise, dust, and equipment.
  • Requires regular site inspections in fabrication shops and occasional outdoor work, with appropriate climate accommodations.
  • May involve occasional overtime or weekend work for audits, training, or emergency preparedness activities.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses, hard hats, and steel-toed boots, is required.

Work Schedule: 

  • Standard day shift,  8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday-Friday, with flexibility to support production needs.
