Multi Story Steel Building. Embracing Obstacles to Make a Difference. A New School Campus for REAL Journey Academies in Fontana, CA

In 2021 Allied Steel Buildings proudly collaborated with REAL Journey Academies, a growing non-profit charter school, to deliver an efficient and cost-effective building solution for their new high school campus in Fontana, California. Though the school had never explored the benefits of steel buildings for previous campuses, tight deadlines and budget constraints ruled out a traditional concrete structure, so in May 2021 the school’s board members and principal turned to Allied in search of an alternative. 

With our track record of success in designing and engineering structures similar in scope to what was needed for the future campus, we knew we could provide a competitive solution that met all of the client’s requirements.

Our promise: a cost-effective and attractive new building that would be complete by August 2022, just in time for the new school year.

Multi Story Steel Building – Limitless Design Possibilities

Using detailed 3D models, Allied worked with the client and their architect to develop the project’s scope, finalizing it and getting the green light for fabrication in November 2021. The three-story building had been meticulously designed to meet all of the future school’s needs, while providing the added time and cost advantages offered only by pre-engineered steel. Featuring a steel frame, TPO roof system with decking, and insulated metal panels, the new campus would be spacious and comfortable, inviting future students to embrace learning and discovery. Attractive bump-outs and wall projections, plus various mezzanines and parapets infused life into the building, while perforated panels were seamlessly designed to envelope the school’s stairwell tower and conceal various rooftop units. 

Identifying Opportunities Within Challenges

With the scope taken care of, Allied turned to the project’s biggest challenge: designing and fabricating the “special moment steel frame” that the highly seismic location required.

While other steel builders shied away from the such high complexity frames and stringent engineering requirements, Allied rose to the occasion, embracing the challenge of ensuring the building’s structural integrity under intense seismic activity.

To Allied, these design and engineering challenges presented new opportunities to demonstrate our abilities. For the same reason, we proudly became a certified fabricator for San Bernardino County – an achievement that reflects our company’s dedication to meeting high standards. With our unwavering enthusiasm for problem-solving and round-the-clock dedication to the client, we provided a solution that they had been unable to find elsewhere, and despite the initial learning curve, met our commitment to do so on time.

Building the Future, Frame by Frame

Delivery for the highly anticipated new campus began in February 2022, and Allied’s team worked tirelessly to ensure smooth installation, meeting the ambitious completion date of August 2022. After welcoming the first of many new enthusiastic students and staff, the high-school approached the end of its first academic year and the beginning of its legacy of successes.
