Job Summary:
The Material Handler – Structural Steel / Overhead Crane Operator is responsible for safely moving, loading, and positioning structural steel beams, plates, and assemblies throughout the production facility using indoor gantry cranes and rigging equipment.
This role plays a critical part in supporting fabrication, welding, and shipping operations by ensuring materials are delivered accurately, efficiently, and safely to the appropriate workstations. The operator must demonstrate strong situational awareness, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety when handling large steel components.
Responsibilities:
- Operate indoor gantry cranes to move structural steel beams, plates, and assemblies throughout the facility
- Safely rig, lift, and position steel materials using slings, chains, chokers, and other rigging equipment
- Load and unload materials from fabrication areas, workstations, and staging zones
- Support production flow by delivering materials to welding, cutting, and assembly stations in a timely manner
- Stage and organize materials for production and outbound shipment
- Inspect rigging equipment and crane functionality prior to use and report any issues
- Ensure proper load balance, stability, and securement when lifting and transporting materials
- Communicate clearly with team members using hand signals or radio when moving loads
- Maintain clear pathways and safe work zones during material movement
- Assist with inventory tracking and material identification as needed
- Coordinate with production, welding, and logistics teams to meet daily production goals
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum 2+ years of experience in material handling within a manufacturing or structural steel environment preferred
- Experience operating overhead or gantry cranes strongly preferred
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Basic knowledge of rigging practices and load handling preferred
- Ability to work in a fast-paced industrial environment
- Strong attention to safety and detail
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Understanding of safe material handling practices for large, heavy steel components
- Ability to safely operate gantry cranes and rigging equipment
- Strong spatial awareness and load control skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members during lifts
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team
- Strong reliability and work ethic
Working Conditions:
- Indoor manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, heavy equipment, and large steel materials
- Frequent interaction with fabrication equipment, welding operations, and overhead lifting systems
- May require extended hours or overtime based on production demands
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to safely work around heavy steel materials and moving equipment
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions common to a manufacturing facility (e.g., varying temperatures, noise levels, potential for dust/debris, and wet floors).
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating equipment and handling supplies.
Work Schedule:
- Monday-Friday, 1st Shift (6:00 am – 2:00 pm), 2nd Shift (2:00 pm – 10:00 pm), 3rd Shift (10:00 pm – 6:00 am)
- Overtime and weekend work as needed.
Benefits:
- Allied employees will be eligible for the Allied benefit package 1st day of the month following 60 days.
- Staffing agency employees will be eligible for the Allied benefit package at the time of conversion. Benefit waiting period will be waived.
