MDS Aero Support
While the first images conjured at the mention of Rolls-Royce may not be of the aerospace industry, it is a large aspect of this revered international organization! Large is just one word to describe the 13,830 lb, comprehensive Trent 900 engines that power the Airbus A380 aircraft fleets around the world. At a 92’x93’x53’Allied Steel building located on the
Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, MDS Aero Support in combination with Rolls-Royce has been testing these engines since 2007. The process includes the design and supply of the piping and support structures for the Combustion Sector Rig systems.
In 2010, two additional Allied Steel buildings were delivered to Thompson, Manitoba for the innovative Global Aerospace Center for Icing and Environmental Research (GLACIER). The cutting-edge facility, designed and built by MDS, is now a year-round engine testing and certification facility specializing in engine icing. Rolls-Royce also plans to use the facility for the certification program of its new Trent XWB engine, developed to power the Airbus A350 aircraft family. In addition, Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies corporation, will test their new Geared Turbofan – PurePower engine. The facility will also be used for a variety of performance, endurance and specialty testing on a year-round basis outside of the icing season.
